Starting a blog is much simpler than you imagine. It’s much simpler and you can be set up writing your first post within the hour. Sound exciting? Good! This post will take you through the simple steps to set up your website and blog. Without further a due let’s jump straight into it.
There are two ways I can do this, recreate the wheel and do what hundreds of people have already done and record my screen taking you through the process or reference the videos you may want to watch that already exist to assist you in the process. I’m going with the latter for simplicity.
Choosing a domain name
Choosing a domain name that you want to stick with is very important. Learn from my mistakes and take some time to think about this. I have changed my domain name 3 times which was time consuming and unproductive. I have written a blog post on this called “Find Your Perfect Business Name As A Blogger” that explains a method of establishing your business name in less than 60 minutes but still, take some time to reflect and revisit the process again until you are 100% happy. The methods covered in this post are:
- Emotional End State Names e.g. Tim Ferris – 4 Hour Work Week
- Abstract Names e.g. Virgin & Apple
- Blending e.g. Hostgator
- Your Own Name
I also give quick tips that you will definitely find useful. If you haven’t read this post yet then read it here. It goes into much more detail and is one of my most popular posts that I’ve received excellent feedback on (leave a comment if you have also found the post useful).
So the first step is to host your website. I recommend bluehost to host your website. They are the provider that host this website and from experience have excellent 24 hour customer support and their web chat service allows you to get your queries answered quick and easy.
To host your website it costs:
- $3.49 for 36 months ($125.64)
- $3.95 for 24 months ($94.80)
- $4.95 for 12 months ($59.40)
Bluehost require you to pay for the full term up front and if you are even starting a blog, you need to be in it for the long haul. Broken down each month, it’s less than the price of a cup of coffee. It’s very inexpensive and a non-recurring expense once paid.
So now you have decided your domain name and have signed up to bluehost, the next step is to install WordPress on bluehost.
To install WordPress on your domain is quick and easy. These steps are:
- Log into your account with bluehost cPanel
- Find the website section and select install WordPress
- Click the install button
- Choose your domain name
- Read the license and service agreement and check the boxes if you are happy
- Click ‘Install Now’
The final step in creating your blog is to apply a theme to your website. You have two options at this point. You can either choose a paid theme or a free theme. Even if you are brand new, I cannot emphasise enough to choose a paid theme. By paying for a theme you get the two added benefits of protection and support. For me, the protection is more than worth paying for due to the amount of time and effort you will be pouring into your blog. The last thing you want is your blog to be hacked and all your hard work thrown away.

The WordPress theme I use is the Avada. This theme has been the #1 WordPress theme for 4 years and makes building your website so easy. It has drag and drop features that allows you to save hundreds of hours and there is no coding knowledge required. Simple!

The next thing you want to do is to install WordPress on your website.
How To Install Avada On WordPress
WordPress has been around for many years and is well known to be the best website creation manager around. I have detailed below how to install WordPress to your website:
- Download Full Theme Files
- Open Avada Full Package – Avada Theme – ‘Avada.zip’
- Log into WordPress and select ‘Appearance’ tab and then ‘Themes’
- Click ‘Add New Theme’
- Click ‘Upload Theme’ and find the ‘Avada.zip’ that you have downloaded
- Click ‘Install Now’
- Click ‘Activate
- You will be redirected to the Avada tab on the left hand side
- Find Fusion Core on this screen and click ‘Install’ (This is a required plugin with Avada)
WordPress has great functionality and the easiest way to learn more about how to use WordPress is through video tutorials. Here is a link to some handy videos I used to get you more familiar with WordPress.
How To Import An Avada Demo
To make life easier you may want to import a demo theme to your website. This takes care of all the design and layout of the content, allowing you to amend the written content as you wish. The steps required to apply a demo theme are:
- Click the ‘Avada’ tab on the left hand side
- Click ‘Install Demos’
- Scroll down to the demo you would like to apply to your website
- Click ‘Preview’ to ensure you are happy with it
- When ready click ‘Install’
- Read the popup around the important information and system requirements and when happy click ‘OK’
- A Success message will appear
